New Module Facilitates Development Programs to Build Bench Strength

The Talent Development module can be added to your DiscoverLink Talent campus to help meet today’s team development challenges. Development programs leverage all of your existing learning programs, content items, and resources so you can get started creating them right away. With customizable programs for every level, this module bridges the gap between learning programs and performance management and helps you:

Standardize Development Programs

Whether your focus is on developing shift leaders, managers-in-training, multiunit leaders, or all of the above, you can create competency-based programs for each one and standardize your development approach system-wide. Creating a new development program is as easy as giving it a name, adding competencies, and then identifying goals with specific action plans to accomplish each.

Competencies can be entered directly, copied from another development program, or copied from an existing Workbook competency.

Competencies can optionally include a review matrix to allow supervisors to rate the learner’s progress for each competency. The review matrix can include up to five customizable ratings, and each competency can have its own review matrix.

Create Goals with Action Plans

Once a competency is added to a development program, you can create specific goals with action plans for each. Goals can be added directly or copied from another development program. Each goal has a series of action items that need to be completed to achieve the goal. Action items can be any of the following:

Checkbox items with instructions and options for the learner to add a comment or upload an image
Existing learning programs already created on your campus
Any item in the resources area, including courses, documents, videos, and weblinks

Learning programs and resource items completed as part of a development program will be tracked in the learner’s history and will be recognized as completed wherever else those items appear. With this release, resource items completed anywhere within DiscoverLink Talent are now tracked and logged in the learner’s history. This important change provides a more comprehensive record of training activity across the organization, whether voluntary, just-in-time, or assigned.

Nominate & Enroll Candidates

Once a development program is created with its competencies, goals, and action plans identified, you are ready to enroll candidates. Managers can be given permission to enroll candidates directly or they can be required to nominate candidates for approval by an administrator. Potential nominees can be searched by name or by selecting them from the Rising Star list (more on this in the next section). Employees can be dragged to the Nominated Employees list, and a note can be optionally added to justify the nomination.

Identify Rising Stars

The Rising Stars feature lets you quickly identify high potential candidates for a development program, streamlining the nomination and enrollment process. Rising Star criteria and resulting candidates are different for each development program. Rising Star eligibility can be limited to specific roles, skill positions, and/or completion of learning programs, and criteria can be based on any combination of the following metrics:

Years of service
Knowledge score
Performance score
Recognition patches
Cross training

The administrator can adjust the measurement sliders to increase or decrease the pool of candidates.

Learner Development Program Experience

Once approved, the learner will see a target icon at the top of their My Training page where they can access their development program. The approver can also optionally notify the learner via the Message Center that they have been enrolled in a development program.

The learner’s Talent Development summary view displays:

Key statistics: Includes start date, number of recognition patches, number of training ribbons, and optionally their leaderboard rank, knowledge score, and performance score, performance history
Career path: Notes their current development program, current skill position, and past skill positions
Personal development log: Provides a convenient way for the learner or their managers to record activities completed outside of a specific development program that may be relevant to their career advancement goals (such as participation in company or external meetings and conferences, educational achievements, and awards and accolades received)
Certifications: Identifies certifications completed, the date last completed, and when recertification is due
Development Program status: Shows the state of their current development program by competency, with a progress indicator and description of each goal

The learner can click on the goal name to see the full description of the goal, access the detailed action plan, work on some of the action items, or view feedback provided by managers.

Manager Development Program Participation

Manager participation is a critical component of any development program. Managers can access Talent Development by clicking the target icon in the top navigation bar, and instantly see a progress report for their enrolled employees by development program.

Clicking on a learner’s name provides a Talent Development summary view similar to what the learner sees, with the addition of a signoff button that appears when a competency has been completed by a learner and is available for a manager to review and sign off.

The competency sign-off window allows the manager to make comments, provide a rating by goal, and also request that the learner redo that competency.
